The impacts of climatic and land surface characteristics on the storm-flood relationship in a tropical monsoon basin of Thailand

Storms and the resultant floods have always been catastrophic disasters raised increasing global concerns in context of climate change. However, relationships between storms remain largely elusive. Here we examine storm-flood relationship its variations Upper Chao Phraya River Basin (UCPRB), a typical tropical monsoon basin southeast Asia. The distributions are characterized by statistical models with aid climatic land surface covariates. is depicted concept elasticity, which represents corresponding changes flood peaks response to storm same return period. elasticity coefficients for 100-year period events range from 0.61 1.20, values tend be smaller long-return than short-return-period events, under high-typhoon-precipitation (high-TP), high-non-typhoon-precipitation (high-nTP), low-forest (low-F) conditions, humid regions arid regions. covariates shown stronger effects on coefficient covariate most basins. In basins where deforestation shows strong impacts relationship, afforestation can an effective approach control.
